Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), the eastern part of Tajikistan, is a large mountain region better known as the PAMIRS with 216’000 inhabitants. Khorog, the capital of GBAO, at an altitude of 2’100 m, is accessible from Dushanbe or Osh by car in 2 days or by plane from Dushanbe if the weather allows.

It is one of the most extraordinary mountain regions of the world with uncounted mountains up to 7’500 m altitude. The famous Pamir Highway links Khorog over the high eastern plateau at altitudes up to 4’500 m with Osh in Kirigstan and with Kashgar in China.
